Wine of the Week – Concha y Toro Terrunyo Carmenere Block 27, 2008

Concha y Toro, a longtime Chilean wine producer, for many years was known as a mass-marketer. Today, going in new and sustainable directions, it’s producing 90+ point Wine Spectator-rated vintages and is leading efforts promoting Carmenere as Chile’s signature variety.
This particular wine, grown in Block 27,falls in the category of “extra premiere,” rating 91 points from the prestigious Wine Spectator, a level it has managed to achieve again and again with recent vintages.
Winemaker Ignacio Rembarren also is a leader in making the winery more sustainable. Early this year, it received certification as such from Vinos de Chile.
This particular wine is rich and fruity with fine tannins and a creamy mouthfeel, and hints of tobacco, kirsch, cassis and wildflowers. It pairs well with grilled meats, spicy foods and peppery sauces. This is a wine that grabs the attention of those sipping it, from the intense aromas to rich flavors.
