Wine of the Week – Mud House Riesling, Waipara Valley, 2012

Rieslings, whether from Alsace or elsewhere, have sometimes been criticized in the past for being too sweet. Today, dry, crisper Rieslings are becoming more the norm, whether from Germany, Alsace or elsewhere in the world like New Zealand where this very enjoyable 2012 Riesling is from, well crafted, well structured and beautifully balanced without any excessive sweetness.
Minerality and structure are here, along with a slight touch of sweetness at the finish. Think medium dry with notes of honeysuckle, citrus and some floral touches.
The vintage took “Best of Class’ earlier this year in the Los Angeles International Wine and Spirits Competition, receiving 98 points and a Gold Medal.
