Wine of the Week – Whispering Angel, Chateau D’Esclans, 2012

Whispering Angel from Chateau D’Esclans in Provence’s La Motte region is made from Grenache, Rolle (Vermentino), Cinsault, Syrah and Tibouren. The juices are vinified in stainless steel. The resulting wine is soft, delicate, with red berry fruit flavors and a touch of grapefruit. Very fresh and clean, the 2012 vintage is smooth and was the winner of a silver Decanter World Wine Award in 2013.
Behind the winery are two prominent wine professionals, Patrick Leon, who oversees the winemaking from a background of chateau management and Sacha Lichine, who grew up in his family’s Chateau Prieure Lichine and later worked as a distributor. At one point in his career, while living in Boston, MA, he served as sommelier at Anthony’s Pier 4. He bought Chateau D’Esclans in 2006 and is said to have been a contributing factor in the growing popularity of rosés, focusing on them as a strong developmental opportunity.
