Wine of the Week – 2012 Blanc De Mer, Bouchard Finlayson

Peter Finlayson’s 2012 Blanc De Mer combines four major varietals, but is dominated, 49 percent, by Riesling. The rest include Vigonier, 27 percent, Sauvignon Blanc, 14 percent, Chardonnay, six percent and Chenin Blanc, two percent.
Bouchard Finlayson began making wines in 1989 in the valley known as Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) in Walker Bay. Today, all fruit is sourced in close proximity to the wine cellar.

The Riesling’s predominance adds an unexpected note, and the nearly perfect fruit at harvest added fruity notes of mango and apricot with hints of vanilla. Well balanced, the wine is delightful on its own or as an accompaniment to various dishes. ABV is 13.4 percent.
