Wine of the Week – Mulderbosch Faithful Hound, 2009

From South Africa’s Stellenbosch on the Southern Cape comes this delicious wine with a poignant tale. Faithful Hound, a rich and fruity blend, celebrates the memory of an abandoned dog whose master never returned, although he waited faithfully outside an empty cottage on Mulderbosch Farm for three years.
Sadly, the winery tells us, his vigilance was never rewarded. Loyal, however, is Mulderbosch, a winemaker which pays attention to the things that matter. It’s a member of the Biodiversity Wine Initiative (BWI) which “seeks to preserve marginal habitats overlapping the Cape’s footprint.”
Faithful Hound 2009 received 91 out of 100 points from Steve Taylor, International Wine Cellar, USA and 91 points from Tom Cannavan, UK. It’s a tribute to Bordeaux blends with a heady mix of Cabernet (54%), Merlot (27%)m Petit Verdot (8%) Cabernet Franc (8%) and Malbec (3%). The result rich, dark blend offers spicy notes of cinnamon and peppermint and berries – black currant and blackberries. It was one of the Cape’s first five varietal blends. This bold vintage offers plenty to savor with a subtle finish.
