Wine of the Week – Goldeneye Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, 2011

Duckhorn’s Goldeneye wines from Anderson Valley are the culmination of Don and Margaret Duckhorn’s search for the perfect grapes when they began thinking about producing Pinot Noir in 1990. In ’96, Duckhorn was born in California, using grapes from Anderson Valley that reflect their terroir. The Duckhorns sought a terroir-inspired expression of California Pinot Noir, much as their Merlots reflected their origins.
This particular wine, which has a suggested retail price of $55, is rich, refined, elegant, spicy and leathery. Winemaker Michael Fay is reminded, he says, of the beauty combined with the rugged, rustic edge of Anderson Valley.
