Wine of the Week – SketchBook 2013 Mendocino County Pinot Noir

Mendocino County wines honor the heritage of Italian immigrants who originally settled in the area. SketchBook is one of a number of labels from Mendocino Wine Co., owned by the Thornhill family for many years.

Rich flavors of black cherry and raspberry please the palate, with notes of sage, vanilla and pepper. Aged 12 months in new and seasoned American oak barrels and redwood upright tanks, the finished wine is 13.5 percent ABV. This is a bright wine with good balance and complexity and a lingering finish.

Originally, the vines were planted by immigrant farmers on the rocky hillsides where they received no irrigation. “Careful processing in small lots nudges the grapes into complex wines with true varietal character,” the winemakers declare. This area, north of Sonoma Valley on the rugged Pacific coast creates the high quality grapes with their own “complex yield.”

The end result is a wine well worth drinking. Think about it for next year’s Thanksgiving turkey!
