Greater Boston Food Bank gleans leftover food

BOSTON – At the recent New England Food Show at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in the Seaport this week, The Greater Boston Food Bank worked with several member agencies and 22 volunteers to glean leftover food at both the Show and the adjacent US Foods Food Fanatics event on the last  day.

They collected 23,058 pounds of food, some 40 percent of which was fresh produce, or the equivalent of 19,215 meals. The collection came on the heels of the previous week’s Seafood Expo North America at which similar efforts resulted in 22,832 pounds of rescued seafood, equating to 19,027 nutritious meals. “These gleaning efforts resulted in a mix of nutritious product that went directly to help those in need in eastern Massachusetts,” says  Product Donation Manager Cheryl Blanton.
