Wine of the Week – Les Hautes de Janeil Grenache-Sauvignon 2014

This lovely white blends 80%  Grenache with 20% Sauvignon Blanc is ideal for celebrating Spring! Les Hautes de Janeil is also young and fresh like the wine, founded in 2013 in the Languedoc region of France by Francois Lurton, fifth generation winemaker from a family with a tradition that goes back to 1897.

He began as the marketing director for his father’s firm, Andre Lurton, in 1985 before founding a consulting company with his brother,  Jacques, in ’88, searching the globe for unique vineyards and terrors for their customers. After discovering the Vallée de l’Agly (an area within the Pyrénées Orientales in the southern portion of the Langeudoc-Roussillon), they rented the estate, intrigued by the Grenache grapes. Mas Janeil is in the Roussilon region where it overlaps a geological fault with different soil types including, schist, granite, limestone and shale.

This wine is 13% ABV and is available through Cape Classics. The vines average 20 to 25 years of age. The Les Hautes de Janeil wines are meant for earlier consumption than those of the estate Mas Janeil. This one has a nose of black fruit and licorice, together with strawberry and raspberries. Round, dense tannins and an elegant structure make it both delicious and food friendly.

This is a wine made with sustainable practices – no synthetic chemicals or pesticides or weed killers.
