FIRESTONE, CO – Honey consumption is rising in the U.S., says new data from the Department of Agriculture (USDA), with an average of nearly a pound consumed per person, compared to a half pound in 1990. “It is exciting to see more Americans continuing to add honey to their daily diet,” says Margaret Lombard, chief executive officer of the National Honey Board, adding that, “While our industry continues to struggle with hive loss, we have been successful in reaching consumers with our message that honey is a pure natural sweetener which clearly appeals to consumers at a time when they are searching for authentic foods.  In addition, when consumers purchase honey, they are not only helping to support the beekeeper, but they are also contributing to the welfare and survival of the honey bees.” The USDA report found that consumption of all caloric sweeteners has declined for the last 15 years while per capita consumption of honey rose over the same time period. Domestic net production of honey was once at an annual average of 167.9 million pounds in the early 1990s but has now fallen to an average of 106.7 million pounds over the last seven years.  Honey bees are critically important to agriculture as pollinators contributing over $14 billion to the value of U.S. crop production. www.honey.com.

Delaware North purchases Sea Crest Beach Hotel

BUFFALO, N.Y., and NORTH FALMOUTH, MA – Delaware North, one of the largest privately held global hospitality and food service companies in the world, expands its portfolio of resorts into Massachusetts, by Sea Crest Beach Hotel on Cape Cod, its first lodging acquisition and owned operation in the eastern United States and New England. This 266-room Cape Cod resort sits on private, 700-foot-long white-sand beach, where guests can enjoy ocean-view rooms and dining. Attracting about six million visitors per year, Cape Cod is a major vacation destination on the U.S. eastern seaboard. Scout Hotels, previous resort manager, will continue in that role. Delaware North already has a major presence in New England as owner-operator of TD Garden, home of the NHL Boston Bruins, owned by Delaware North Chairman Jeremy Jacobs and the NBA Boston Celtics. TD Garden is one of the busiest arenas in the world with more than 2.5 million annual visitors. Earlier this year, Delaware North also broke ground on a 1.7-million-square-foot, mixed-use project on the land where the original Boston Garden stood. The Hub on Causeway, one of the largest current development projects in Boston, will include a pair of towers in front of TD Garden, creating a gateway for the arena with stores and restaurants, 500 residences, offices and a 200-room hotel.

McDonald’s expands breakfast menu for all day

OAK BROOK, IL – McDonald’s is expanding its breakfast menu to all-day service this fall, says Nation’s Restaurant News, which reports it will offer both biscuit and Egg McMuffin options in all markets and also add McGriddle choices.

Boston Calling Events & Madison Square Garden in deal

BOSTON – Madison Square Garden and Boston Calling Events reportedly made a deal for the former to move into musical festivals, according to published reports. The local music festival which also plans a first Copenhagen Beer Celebration this fall will continue event in a  new venue in Allston, MA next year, says Co-Founder and CEO Brian Appel.

BevSpot raises $11 million with Bain Capital

BOSTON – BevSpot, provider of inventory management for restaurants, bars, nightclubs and lodging facilities, raised $11 million in a Series B round with Bain Capital Ventures this week. The funding will enable BevSpot to develop current and future software products.

Barteca Restaurant Group maps further growth

NORWALK, CT – Barteca Restaurant Group, which most recently opened its second Atlanta location, the 13th in the company, will open two more in Nashville late this year or early next, according to a published report.
