Made from locally sourced malted barley in a process similar to that of a single malt whiskey, Mad March Hare Irish Poitin (pronounced potcheen) brings a wild history as it enters the U.S. market this year, already winning gold medals in various events.
It is distilled three times in small copper pots, with the final distillate coming off the stills at 72 to 75% ABV. However, after a gentle filtration technique and bottling, the ABV measures 40%.
It offers the character of un-aged brown spirits but has the versatility of a white spirit such as tequila.
Mad March Hare’s story began at the turn of the century in Ireland where a local rogue named Michael Mooney operated as the master of a long outlawed trade – distilling. He spent his life on the run, presenting himself as a fruit and vegetable trade.
The locals would know there was a fresh batch ready when they’d see him walking down Main St., his bowler hat tilted to one side! Because production was not legal, he’d relay on bad weather to cover his illicit distilling which produced smoke, and the Irish weather frequently cooperated.
On overcast days, he might be seen rushing down Main St. with a broad smile, happy to be about to distill another batch. And while not everyone knew he was a distiller, many thought of him as being “mad as a March hare”- hence the name!
