Wine(s) of the Week – Reds for cooler days

Cooler days will soon be upon us, bringing chilly, shivery days when we’ll be seeking wines that warm our bodies and our spirits.

We’ve picked four that have come our way in recent weeks and want to share them:

  • Amancaya Gran Reserva 2013 – This blend of elegantly textured Cabernet Sauvignon and fruity Argentinian Malbec (50% each), fills the bill. It’s 14,5% alcohol/volume and is named for an Andean flower that the native Indian women of Mendoza used to decorate their hair. It’s from Domaines Barons De Rothschild (Lafite) and Nicolas Catena of Mendoza, Argentina.
  • Vivanco Reserva 2010 – This spicy, fruity wine is made by the fourth generation of a winemaking family, Rafael Vivanco Sáenz who studied agricultural engineering in Spain and later, spent time in Bordeaux. Returning, he saw the vineyards as a personal challenge and resolved to let the fruit take center stage.
This wine is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Graciano.
  • Fumanelli Valpolicella Classico Superiore 2013 from Italy comes from an estate that’s been making wines since 1470. This wine displays great structure and elegance, balancing acidity and fruits with hints of vanilla, dried herbs and tea leaves. It’s a blend of 40% Corvina, 40% Corvinone, and 20% Rondinella.
  • Légende Pauillac 2012 which embodies the tradition of Lafite and France’s prestigious Pauillac terroir. It’s 40% aged in barrels made at Lafite’s own cooperage for 6 to 9 months. Despite moderate pricing, it offers a nose with complexity and elegance – think tobacco, dried flowers and even mint. It’s a robust offering with elegance and structure and goes well with lamb and strong cheeses, the estate proclaims. The wine is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot.

All four wines are imported by Pasternak Wine Imports.

Wine of the Week: Amancaya Gran Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec 2011, Les Domaines Barons De Rothschild (Lafite)/Nicolas Catena

This delightful Amancaya Gran Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon/Malbec 2011 was the second joint venture in creating a premium wine between DBR (Lafite) and the Catena family. It’s a blend the combines the elegance of Cabernet Sauvignon with the fruit of Argentina’s Malbec and bears the name of a mountain flower found growing in the Andes. The grapes, from the Catena family’s vineyards, were all more than 30 years old and from an altitude between 800 and 1499 m.
The wine was aged for a year in French oak barrels, 20% of which were new.

The final product was deep crimson with a nose of red and black fruit, red currants and plums and touches of mint and cedar. The bouquet has vanilla, spices and mocha notes from the oak barrels. With pleasant, well balanced tannins, the resulting wine was 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 70% Malbec, with 15% ABV. It’s rich and flavorful, delivering elegance from the joint venture, known as Bodegas Caro.
