Wine of the Week – Santa Carolina Herencia 2009 Carmenere

Wines from Chile offer some great values and Santa Carolina’s 2009 Herencia Carmenere is an excellent example of the elegance this native grape can deliver. with a winemaking tradition dating to 1875, Santa Carolina’s focus is wines that showcase the terroir and are made with an emphasis on sustainable, organic principles.
This wine joins other vintages, acclaimed by various publications which ranked them anywhere from 93 to 94 points. With a deep ruby red color, Herencia is 96 precent Carmenere, three percent Cabernet and one percent Malbec. The wine offers notes of cedar, vanilla, leather and in the finish, chocolate. It is 14.8 percent ABV.
The grapes come from two major winemaking regions- Peumo in the Cachapoal Valley and Los Lingues in the Colchagua valley. After fermentation, the wine is pressed and transferred to first-use French barrels and later, in medium-toast French barrels especially chosen for it. Once it is bottled, Herencia is aged another year.
On as personal note, this wine was the star of the show at a recent Super Bowl party we took it to! Sharing great wine with good friends is what wine is all about. This is a wine that people will enjoy and ask for again when they dine out.

This particular wine is rich and fruity with fine tannins and a creamy mouthfeel, and hints of tobacco, kirsch, cassis and wildflowers.
