Wine of the Week – Polkura 2012 Syrah

We were introduced to Polkura recently by a bartender at Barcelona Wine Bar’s newest restaurant in Boston’s South End. The name is from a little hill in the vineyard in Chile and supposedly means ‘yellow stone’in Mapuche. The wine is a blend – predominantly Syrah (91%) with small amounts of Cabernet, Tempranillo, Grenache, Malbec and Vigonier. It is 14.7% ABV.The Cholchagua Valley where the wines made by vintners Munoz and Bruchfield are was rated the World’s Best Wine Region in 2005 by Wine Enthusiast. This wine is made by one of the New World winemaking rising stars, Sven Bruckfeld. An earlier vintage, Polkura Syrah 2008. was\chosen by the Wine Spectator among its “The Top 100 Wines of the Year.”

Decomposed granite lends minerality to this wine and the coastal region gives it fruitiness and spice. Well balanced, it is complex and full-bodied. With a suggested retail price it’s a terrific value and would work well with many dishes on a menu as well as by the glass. Visit www.polkura-usa.com
