Wine(s) of the Week – 2 special wines’ sales support cause

Two very special wines from Jarman Wines give back to the buyers this year during the holiday season by supporting finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease. Each purchase helps benefit the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation (ADFF).

Additionally, the winery, in Carmel Valley, CA, has a new tasting room that offers three levels of tasting and three specially themed picnic packages. Gift certificates for them make a perfect holiday gift, the winery notes.

Holman Ranch CEO and eldest daughter, Hunter Lowder, has taken the best hand-selected estate grapes and created two premium varietals, Jarman 2014 Estate Chardonnay and Jarman 2013 Estate Pinot Noir. One dollar from each bottle sold goes to the ADFF.

The promotion honors her mother, Jarman Lowder, who died if early onset Alzheimer’s after a long battle. Visit info@jarmanwine.com for more information. “We wanted to honor her, give back and increase awareness,” says Lowder. “Everything we do her and the reason this all exists is because of her.”

Wine(s) of the Week – time for winter whites

A snowy winter weekend is a good time to celebrate winter whites! Think clean, crisp and delicious – meant for sipping as you watch the snow fall outside your windows.
We love the wines of Portugal and Herdade d’Esporão doesn’t disappoint. Monte Velho 2013 is the result of a long, wet spring and dry summer months. Fermented in stainless steel tanks with temperature control, it had an early bottling.
The wine is 3.5% ABV and won two silver medals.

This is a well balanced wine with a long, aromatic fruit finish from three varietals, Antao, Perrum and Roupeiro. The finish is citrusy and the color, pale straw. It’s moderately priced – mid-teens – and makes a great addition to wine by the glass lists.

From our own West Coast in California’s Carmel Valley, Holman Ranch‘s Pint Gris 2013 Estate Grown is made with  organically grown grapes from the ranch which has been producing wines since 1928.
This particular white is priced in the high teens and is 12.5% ABV. Fresh and fruity, it makes a welcome addition to the dinner table or by the glass with its bright acidity. The climate here, is ideal for Pinot Gris, with  the warmth of the inland valley and a cooling marine layer that create an ideal microclimate.

Wine of the Week – Holman Ranch Pinot Gris 2012

A perfect crisp white summer wine with good minerality, Holman Ranch 2012 Pinot Gris is a beautiful pale gold color with hints of green, and notes of peach and flowers. Serve with oysters or seafood. It’s a wine with good minerality. ABV is 12.5 percent and the suggested retail price is around $16 for an excellent value.

Wine of the Week – Holman Ranch 2012 Estate Grown Virgin Chardonnay

This distinctive California Chardonnay from Holman Ranch in Carmel Valley, 12 miles inland from the Pacific coast, is unoaked, with excellent minerality and full of citrus and floral notes. The finish is clean and crisp. Founder Jarman Lowder hopes it’s a vintage that will be “part of occasions that mark time with memories that are cherished forever.” It’s excellent on even an unmemorable evening as an accompaniment to a light meal!
