Wine(s) of the Week – Rustenberg Chardonnay ’15 & Niro Pecorino ’16

It’s summer and white wines are the beverage we want to be sipping on hot 80+-degree days! Here are two we recently tried and found to be good options for steamy summer drinking.

The South African Rustenberg Stellenbosch Chardonnay, 2015 is made with grapes from the best vineyards and are fermented and aged for 12  months in French casks. You’ll detect notes of apricot and orange peel with hints of marzipan and citrus as well. From Italy, there is the Pecorino Terre di Chieti from Italy’s Abruzzo region, made from Pecorino grapes which offer hints of tropical fruits, herbs and minerals. Nero Pecorino, the winemaker says, is “an authentic example of Abruzzo’s recently rediscovered signature white grape.

The two offer pleasurable drinking on these warm and often humid summer days and evenings. Enjoy!

Wine of the Week – Two whites for summer nights

Two lovely white wines we’d like to share for summer sipping are the Dashwood Sauvignon Blanc 2014, a great reflection of New Zealand’s Malrlborough terrain. Stone fruit and citrus flavors are completed by tropical notes . The wine is 13%ABV and is imported in the U.S. by Pasternak Wine Imports.

The second, from South Africa, lends itself to an after dinner drink thanks to its richness and sweetness. It is the Nederburg 2011 Special Late Harvest. Nederburg has been making wines since 1791 a great heritage. This wine is full of rich dried fruit aromas such as apricot and raisin, acidity and also has more than a few honey notes. It lends itself so savoring and enjoying at the end of the meal. It is a blend  of Muscat d’ Frontignan. Chenin Blanc, Weisser Riesling and Gewurtztraminer.

Wine(s) of the Week – For Sauvignon Blanc Day!

May 16 is Sauvignon Blanc Day although we like to celebrate Sauvignon Blanc on warm Spring days, and also hot Summer days and through the Fall and Winter! These beautiful sippers include a range – from France’s Loire Valley to far away New Zealand, with aothers from Chile.
They are expressions of their winemakers’ approach to the grapes and each is lovely, crisp and delicious in its own way. In France, the Saget La Perriére wines come from a ninth generation owned and managed winery that seeks to explore the best expressions of the grape. Domaine de la Perriére Sancerre 2013 has no added yeast and is aged three months on fine lees, bottled and aged three more months.
In contrast, a ‘sister’ wine, La Petite Perriére Sauvignon Blanc has special yeasts chosen for their Sauvignon Blanc qualities added, ages on the lees and is bottled and sold for optimal freshness. All four are imported by Pasternak Wine.
The Los Vascos Sauvignon Blanc 2013 comes from the Domaines Baron de Rothschild (Lafite) estate in Chile in the Casablanca region where a cold spring and early summer led to a late harvest. The grapes were sorted before being chilled and macerated for several hours. To preserve aroma, they were fermented at low temperatures.
New Zealand is home to numerous Sauvignon Blanc producers and Dashwood creates wines that reflect the Marlborough region. The wines are certified as NZ Sustainable. Dashwood seeks to preserve the deep aromatic and sparkling structure of the wine, keeping the fruit as cool as possible to retain it bright, fresh flavors. Gentle crushing and cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks help retain those characteristics of the fruit.
Try all four – compare and contrast – they differ from one another but are all Sauvignon Blanc – let’s celebrate it!
