Safety advisory from USI about ticks

WOBURN, MA – USI’s Risk Control Team issues a safety advisory about ticks as we get into the summer months:

Experts advise that this summer’s tick population and incidence of humans contracting tick-borne illnesses are at an all-time high.

Following a mild winter, expanding deer and mouse populations, the prevalence of black-legged (Deer) ticks pose a risk to all who spend time outdoors. In addition to Lyme disease, ticks are responsible for the spread of up to 14 diseases including Powassan, a rare illness that experts see rising rapidly. According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), 50% of Powassan survivors may experience long-term neurological symptoms.

Prevention is key to avoiding the potential exposure to these hazards.
Use insect repellent with 20% or more DEET, picaridin or IR3535
Treat clothing with products containing 0.5% permethrin
Wear long sleeves and pants when in wooded areas; light-colored clothing aids in spotting ticks
Avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter
Inspect your body for ticks after being in suspect areas
Remove ticks as soon as possible using tweezers; promptness reduces the risk of infection
Pets can transfer ticks; check with your veterinarian about tick repellents for your pets
